Did Mark Twain’s Spirit Write a Novel?

A book channeled via the Ouija board, the woman who wrote it, and the ghost whose restless spirit longed for a scribe on earth. Was Emily Grant Hutchings that earthly muse, or was this a profound publicity stunt?

I love seeing this zine evolve as a piece! The first couple zines covered your traditional folkloric fare: monsters, legends, etc; however, Varla takes her theme deeper. A woman publishing a book in the early 20th century might have been seen as a rarity, especially during women’s sufferage. Of course, it’s fascinating that Emily Hutching published “Jap Herron” with the help of an ouija board! What’s even more profound, is a self employed woman during this era!

Female empowerment provides the subtext for this story, and Ms. Varla Ventura does a brilliant job of communicating that in the patriarchal heyday of the early 20th century. What an insightful and enlightening jaunt through Mark Twain’s lesser known works.

I appreciate the social impact that this zine encapsulates. As Jeff Belanger always hints at, “…What do these things say about us as people..?” If you look hard enough at the veil of the paranormal or supernatural, you’ll see the human flaws and connection we all search for.
